DoubleSpeed: Equipment
- Will I need special equipment to use DoubleSpeed Broadband?
- Can I use the equipment I currently use for broadband with DoubleSpeed Broadband?
- Should I use an Ethernet, wireless, or USB connection between my PC and equipment with DoubleSpeed Broadband?
- What if I don’t have an Ethernet connection on my PC to use with DoubleSpeed Broadband?
Will I need special equipment to use DoubleSpeed Broadband?
- Yes. DoubleSpeed Broadband is based on the new ADSL2+ technology that requires ADSL2+ compatible equipment at your premises. Bulldog recommends an Ethernet modem or a wireless router that are fully tested and supported for ADSL2+. You must connect the equipment to your line as soon as you receive it so that it is ready when we activate the service.
Can I use the equipment I currently use for broadband with DoubleSpeed Broadband?
-
DoubleSpeed Broadband is based on the new ADSL2+ technology that requires ADSL2+ compatible equipment at your premises. Some recent broadband equipment has been manufactured to be ADSL2+ compatible (or can be made compatible by upgrading its firmware). However, as a general rule, USB equipment can not support the full potential of ADSL2+ speeds, as they typically implement USB 1.1 standard (rather than the speedier and more recent USB 2.0).
You must check your existing equipment manufacturer’s Web pages to verify if your equipment is ADSL2+ compatible. If it is not compatible, it will stop working when we activate the service.
Due to the relative newness of ADSL2+ technology, the performance level of equipment with different make / model / firmware version still widely varies. To benefit from the full potential of ADSL2+ speeds, Bulldog recommends an Ethernet modem or a wireless router that are fully tested and supported for ADSL2+. Bulldog can not guarantee your achieving the full potential of ADSL2+ speeds if you use different equipment.
Should I use an Ethernet, wireless, or USB connection between my PC and equipment with DoubleSpeed Broadband?
-
To benefit from the full potential of ADSL2+ speeds, you must avoid using a USB connection and instead use an Ethernet / wireless connection between your PC and equipment. Bulldog recommends an Ethernet modem or a wireless router that are fully tested and supported for ADSL2+.
The advantages of Ethernet / wireless equipment over USB connected ones are:
1) You can set it up easily without installing a software driver on your PC.
2) You can connect multiple devices (e.g. PC, Xbox, Play Station, etc.) instead of only PC.
3) You can switch off your PC at anytime and keep your equipment ‘always on’ to connect other devices.
What if I don’t have an Ethernet connection on my PC to use with DoubleSpeed Broadband?
- Most recent PCs and almost all office PCs do have an Ethernet connection (it looks like a standard telephone socket, but slightly bigger). If you don’t have an Ethernet connection on your PC, Bulldog recommends you to purchase an Ethernet adapter for your PC. If you are using a USB connection for your Ethernet adapter, please make sure you are using the new USB 2.0 standard, rather then the much slower USB 1.1.
