What does a modem do?

  • Typically a modem is a small box (or slot-in card) that connects your computer by way of a 'USB' connection to your phone socket (via a microfilter) thereby enabling connection to your broadband service. The operating systems supported do not include Windows 95. They will be clearly indicated on the modem box.
  • If you are on a budget, for single users, we recommend a USB modem.
  • Bulldog offers a selection of attractively priced modems.

What does a microfilter do?

  • A microfilter splits the voice and data signals on your phone line, so you can enjoy broadband whilst using your phone at the same time (unlike, for instance, a dial-up internet connection). You will need a microfilter for each phone socket that is connected to telephone (or fax) equipment. Microfilters are often supplied with modems and routers, and can be purchased through the shopping cart in your personal portal.

When will the equipment be sent to me?

  • As part of the broadband provisioning process, Bulldog qualifies whether your line is suitable for the service you have ordered before shipping the hardware to your chosen address. Equipment will arrive shortly before the service is activated, so you should not expect to receive it within a couple of days of placing the order.
  • Please note: As a matter of course, Bulldog aims to minimise the time it takes to connect you. In view of this, on occasion, a line may become activated before the equipment is received. If you cancel within 7 working days of order date, or your line is not deemed suitable for the service you have requested, Bulldog shall not dispatch the equipment. In the event that the equipment is already shipped, Bulldog will require you to return the package (in the condition they received it) before a full refund of appropriate connection fee and equipment (where applicable) can be issued. See the returns instructions below for further information.

Will my PC or Mac be fast enough for this service?

  • As long as your computer uses one of the following operating systems: Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 2000 Professional or XP. Mac OS 8.6 or higher; and it has a USB or Ethernet port, it should be fine. If you use your broadband connection to view video-on-demand or other memory and processor hungry functions, of course, you may feel that your computer may benefit from more power.
